Orava — the most authentic corner of Slovakia

Nestled in northern Slovakia along the Polish border, Orava is one of the country’s most authentic regions — rich in folklore, traditional architecture and living rural traditions. Its undisputed landmark is Orava Castle, a dramatic 13th-century fortress rising on a 112-metre-high rock above the Orava River and famously used as a filming location for the 1922 classic Nosferatu.

Wooden churches, the open-air Museum of Orava Village in Zuberec and traditional raft trips on the Orava River provide plenty to explore beyond the castle. Orava works particularly well for groups arriving from Kraków or as part of a combined programme with nearby Malá Fatra.

Highlights

What Orava gives a programme

Orava Castle & forest railway

The “Dracula castle” of Nosferatu fame — a dramatic, vertical castle visit with spectacular views over the Orava valley. Combine it with a ride on the historic forest railway through the surrounding mountains.

Living folklore

The open-air Museum of Orava Village in Zuberec, the UNESCO-listed wooden church in Tvrdošín, and the monumental Christ the King statue in Klin, with a smaller statue of Pope John Paul II nearby.

Combine Orava & Malá Fatra in one programme

Around 1 hour from Žilina, Orava fits naturally into a northern Slovakia itinerary — allowing operators to combine castles, folklore and mountain experiences without adding unnecessary driving time.
