Austria
Music, mountains & imperial history
Over centuries, the Habsburgs channelled immense wealth into the fine arts and music, collecting palaces the way others do stamps. You’ll still feel their cultural reverberations in Austria today – be it watching Lipizzaner stallions prance at the Spanish Riding School, or crossing the Hofburg to eyeball Rubens masterpieces in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, or Klimt and Schiele at the MuseumsQuartier. The work of classical pop stars such as Mozart, Strauss, Mahler, Haydn and Schubert echo as loudly as ever at lavishly gilded concert halls, and music festivals like Salzburg Festival and Bregenzer Festspiele are staged against uplifting lakeside or mountain backdrops.
Vienna
The city of Vienna (Wien) is the capital of Austria. The city offers you glamour, glitz, excitement and a wonderful place to indulge yourself in culture. The circular road of the Ringstrasse is lined with beautiful and at times slightly ostentatious buildings, while tourism is bursting within the Innere Stadt (Inner City) of Vienna, which is brimming with history and culture. Vienna is partly surrounded by the Danube Canal (Donaukanal) and dominated by the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral). Many tourist attractions are just a short stroll from the Stephansplatz and this is the perfect place to start your exploration of the city. Vienna is often described as being at the very crossroads of both the east and west regions of Europe and is famous for being the birthplace of the waltz, the city where Sigmund Freud once worked, and where Austrian cuisine is at its very best. Must is famous Wiener Schnitzel, as well as coffee & wine culture in Vienna cannot be forgotten, relax at spectacular Sacher torte, or strudel cake.
