Trenčín — European Capital of Culture 2026
In 2026, Trenčín holds the title of European Capital of Culture, adding a strong cultural dimension to programmes across western and northern Slovakia. The year-round programme of festivals, exhibitions and cultural events provides operators with an additional reason to include Trenčín in their itineraries.
The mighty Trenčín Castle dominates the historic centre, with the famous Roman inscription dating to 179 AD carved into the rock below. Just 15 minutes away, Trenčianske Teplice adds spa and wellness experiences. Together, they create a compact programme combining heritage, culture and relaxation — conveniently positioned between Bratislava and northern Slovakia.
For groups, Trenčín works particularly well as a half-day or overnight stop, or as a day trip from Bratislava combined with Trnava and Piešťany. This creates an easy western Slovakia circuit combining historic towns, culture, castle heritage and spa experiences in one programme.
Highlights
What Trenčín gives a programme
ECoC 2026 & beyond
The European Capital of Culture year puts Trenčín firmly on the cultural map — but the city is worth visiting well beyond 2026. A growing calendar of festivals, exhibitions and cultural events, combined with excellent road and rail connections, is strengthening Trenčín's position as one of Slovakia's emerging cultural destinations. For operators, Trenčín offers a compelling programme stop beyond the ECoC year, whether as a day trip from Bratislava, a cultural stop between Bratislava and northern Slovakia, or in combination with nearby Piešťany and Trnava.
Trenčín Castle & city
One of Slovakia's three largest castles, rising above a beautiful historic city centre, with the famous Roman inscription dating to 179 AD carved into the rock below. The castle is also linked to the romantic legend of Fatima and Omar — a story that has become part of Trenčín's identity as the city of love.
Trenčianske Teplice, Skalka & Čachtice
The famous sulphur spa town of Trenčianske Teplice, just 15 minutes from Trenčín, with its distinctive Moorish-style Hammam bathhouse. Nearby Skalka offers a historic pilgrimage site and monastery, while the ruins of Čachtice Castle are associated with the legendary “Bloody Countess”, Elizabeth Báthory.
