The tour

What this tour is

Trnava is called the Slovak Rome, or the little Rome, and the reason is the sheer number of churches packed into a small walled centre. The day starts there with a walking tour, and St Nicholas’s cathedral can be added.

Topoľčianky is next. Its château was the summer residence of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, and beside it is the Slovak National Stud Farm — one of the oldest in Europe and still working. The two together make a stop that is unlike anything else on this list.

The day ends in Nitra, the oldest recorded town in Slovakia, with its upper and lower city and St Emmeram’s cathedral on the castle hill. Nitra is also where mead is tasted, if the clients want it — the old honey wine that predates Slovak wine by some centuries. Hotel pick-up and drop-off, a licensed guide and an air-conditioned vehicle are included; entrances and the mead tasting are not.
