The tour
What this tour is
This is the longest tour in the catalogue and the one that gets furthest from the city. It starts at Čičmany, a village of timber houses painted with white geometric ornament — the “Čičmany pattern”, which has since been borrowed by half the country’s designers but began here, as protection for the wood.
Then Rajecká Lesná, which holds the largest wooden crib in Slovakia: a carved, moving nativity the size of a room, showing Slovak folk traditions and crafts rather than Bethlehem. Through the spa town of Rajecké Teplice the day continues into the Vrátna Valley, widely held to be the most beautiful in the country, and up by cable car to Snilovské sedlo at 1,524 metres. The return ticket is included.
The last stop is Terchová — a summer and ski resort, the home of the Terchová music that is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list, and the birthplace of Juraj Jánošík, the outlaw who in legend took from the rich and gave to the poor. The same region runs for individual travellers under our retail brand as the Vrátna, Čičmany, Žilina and Rajecká Lesná tour.
