The excursion

What this day is

This is the walking introduction to Bratislava, and the one most groups start with. A licensed local guide takes the party through the entire historic core of Bratislava on foot and finishes at Bratislava Castle, so a group that has only half a day still leaves having seen the city properly rather than from a coach window.

The walk begins in front of the Park Inn by Radisson Danube hotel, or at your own hotel in the centre if that is easier, and ends at the castle with the view over the Danube and across to Austria. Everything in between is within a twenty-minute walk, which is what makes Bratislava unusually comfortable for a group on foot.

The same route runs daily for individual travellers under our retail brand, Bratislava City Tours, as the Bratislava walking tour.

Hour by hour

How the day runs

The order can be changed, the day can be shortened, and it can be joined to another excursion — tell us what you need and we re-quote it.

1

Meeting and introduction

The guide meets the group in front of the Park Inn by Radisson Danube hotel, or at your own hotel in the centre, and gives a short introduction to the city.

2

Hviezdoslav Square and the opera

Along Hviezdoslav Square past the Slovak National Theatre opera house and the Reduta, home of the Slovak Philharmonic.

3

The Main Square and the Primate’s Palace

Through the Main Square and along the Franciscan church to the Primate’s Palace and the Old Town Hall — the quiet corner of the old town most visitors miss.

4

St Michael’s Gate and St Martin’s Cathedral

Up through St Michael’s Gate, the last of the medieval city gates, and along the former House of the Hungarian Parliament to St Martin’s Cathedral, where eleven Hungarian kings and eight queens were crowned.

5

Bratislava Castle

The walk ends at Bratislava Castle, on the terrace above the Danube with the view over the city and across the river into Austria.
