The excursion
What this day is
Central Slovakia was one of the wealthiest regions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the reason was underground. Silver came out of Banská Štiavnica and gold out of Kremnica, and the money went straight into the architecture, which is why three relatively small mining towns look the way they do.
Banská Štiavnica’s historic centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Kremnica has had a mint since 1328 and it is still working — the oldest still in operation anywhere in the world. Banská Bystrica was the centre of the Slovak National Uprising in 1944.
