The tour

What this tour is

Bojnice is the castle on every Slovak postcard, and it earns it. There has been a fortress on the site since at least 1013, when it appears in a document from Zobor Abbey, but what stands there now is the result of a rebuilding between 1888 and 1909 by Count Ján Pálffy, who had seen the châteaux of the Loire and wanted one. It sits above a spa town, and the clients get an hour of their own there after the visit.

The afternoon is Trenčín, one of the oldest towns in the country. Its castle stands on a rock above the centre, and on that rock is the oldest written record in Slovakia: an inscription cut in AD 179 by the soldiers of Marcus Aurelius’s army, recording their victory at Laugaricio. A walking tour of the historic centre and another free hour follow.

Hotel pick-up and drop-off, a licensed guide and an air-conditioned vehicle are included; castle entrances are quoted separately. The same route runs for individual travellers under our retail brand as the Bojnice Castle and Trenčín tour.
