The tour

What this tour is

This one leaves the city behind. A short scenic drive out of Bratislava brings the clients to Devín, where the castle stands on a rock at the point the Morava runs into the Danube. The guide walks them through the ruins and the history, which runs from the Roman garrison through the Great Moravian period and the medieval fortress to the moment Napoleon’s troops blew it up.

The second half is more recent and, for many clients, the part they remember. From the castle the party walks down to the confluence itself — a natural border between Slovakia and Austria — and on to the Gate of Freedom, the memorial to the people shot trying to cross the Iron Curtain here. For forty years this riverbank was a sealed military zone, and the guide tells that story standing on it.

Hotel pick-up and drop-off, a licensed guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and the entrance to Devín Castle are all included. The same half day runs for individual travellers under our retail brand as the Devín Castle tour from Bratislava.
